A december 24-ei éjféli mise volt a vízválasztó a régi korokban. Előtte, az adventi időszakban tilos volt a mulatozás és böjtöt is tartottak. Karácsonykor viszont a termékenységet jelentő életek kaptak helyet az ünnepi asztalon és számos olyan babona és néphagyomány övezi a szeretet ünnepét, ami a következő évi jó termést és bőséget hozta magával.
