Népszavazást tartottak a külhoni magyarok kettős állampolgárságáról még 2004. december 5-én. Ez azonban az alacsony részvétel miatt eredménytelenül végződött. A határon túli magyarság kapcsolatát mindez hosszú távon megterhelte. A kettős állampolgárságot 2010-ben bevezették, de számos kérdés azóta is vitákat szül. Erről tartottak előadást szakemberek részvételével a Mathias Corvinus Collégium pécsi képviseleténél legutóbb.
